Indoor navigation: wiki Technical terms explained

Visible Light Communication (VLC)

Visible light communication can transmit data via light and can be used for indoor navigation.

VLC (Visible Light Communication) can transfer data by means of light. The light can be emitted by an LED or a fluorescent tube and has to be received and converted by a photo detector for example a smartphone camera. The lamp “flickers” in a way that humans don’t recognize it and that way transmits a code which can be used for indoor positioning. Supermarkets are one of the possible application areas. An app can use the information and guide the user to products on his shopping list or receive location based offers. One big advantage of VLC is that no additional hardware is necessary.
